Hello from Rwanda!
Today was
our first full day and it was such a great start. After breakfast, we went to
the Genocide Memorial. It was so eye-opening and devastating to learn and read
about it. What hit me the hardest was a room full of pictures and information
about the kids who were killed. It was horrible to see a picture of a happy,
smiling kid and then reading about the way they were murdered. After that we
went to the PEACE office and headed to Byumba.
The drive to Byumba was
absolutely gorgeous!! As soon as we got settled in to the compound, our
translators went with us to a hall where a wedding was being held. We thought
it would be fun to sit in the back row and watch but everyone freaked out when
they saw the "muzungus" and welcomed us. We got pulled up to the front and the
bride grabbed my hands and pulled me to dance with her. We danced with the
bride and groom and some kids and it was so so so much fun. We played and
laughed with some kids outside after the wedding and are heading into a mellow
night.
If today was any indicator of what this trip has in store, I’m so
stoked. Their joy is so contagious and I am in love with the country and it’s
people!! We’re all so thankful for how wonderful everything has been so far and
so ready for what God has in store for us this week!
